CANDLER PARK
Just south of Ponce de Leon Ave at the intersection of Clifton & McClendon
www.candlerpark.org

Nestled in the middle of one of Atlanta’s oldest neighborhoods (it’s on the National Register of Historic places and is named after Coca-Cola founder Asa G. Candler) is a quaint block of shops and restaurants with something for everyone. No visit to the Atlanta area is complete without breakfast at the Flying Biscuit Cafe and a slice of Fellini’s Pizza, and both can be found in Candler Park. Before or after your breakfast or lunch, pick up a one-of-a-kind gift made by a local artist at Donna Van Gogh’s Artist Market, search Full Moon CDs for that rare musical find and delight the pets, children and pet lovers in your life with something special from A Girl and a Dog. Candler Park also boasts vintage clothing, spectacular wedding dresses and Atlanta’s best piercing parlor. Head west on McClendon to walk off your meal through the neighborhood’s namesake park, along the streets lined with renovated early 1900s bungalows, or while you play nine holes at the Candler Park Golf Course. The area is just a few blocks from the Candler Park MARTA station.

See the wares of over 200 antique dealers in this unique neighborhood, where shops are located in homes, churches and stores dating back as far as the mid-1800s. Many of the antique items commonly seen in restaurants and bars all over the country come from Chamblee’s Antique Row. Professional crating and shipping is available. Just a short walk from the Chamblee MARTA station!

EAST ATLANTA VILLAGE

On the edge of DeKalb County, near Moreland Ave and I-20, sits one of Atlanta’s hippest shopping, dining and entertainment districts. Since the mid-1990’s, the neighborhood has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts, and is now home to several eclectic shops, restaurants, bars and nightspots, as well as two of Atlanta’s most popular live music venues, the EARL and the Echo Lounge. Stroll the several blocks of Flat Shoals Road and Glenwood Avenue and discover vintage clothing, African drums, unique jewelry, luxurious home decor, kitschy gift items and more. Top off your shopping excursion with creative comfort food at the Heaping Bowl & Brew, pizza at Grant Central or a burger at the EARL or the Flatiron, have coffee and dessert at Sacred Grounds and stick around for the lounge scene at the Fountainhead or to see a local or national band.

Wondering where you can find the latest Asian pop music and videos, Chinese herbs, Thai iced tea, Vietnamese books, Korean rice cakes, authentic Asian apparel and home decor, Hong Kong barbequed steak or dim sum? Look no further! Atlanta’s International Corridor is a destination for members of the Asian community throughout the southeast. However, everyone is welcome to enjoy authentic food at any of the casual or elegant restaurants, purchase unique gifts and make new discoveries. Also enjoy browsing the vast offerings of Asian provisions at Ranch 99 and Dinho, two of the area’s largest Asian grocery stores.

Another major presence along the International Corridor, though less centralized, is the Hispanic community. Many Mexican restaurants and taquerias can be found, ranging from very authentic to highly Americanized. Many of the Hispanic-owned shops feature jewelry, cowboy boots, religious figurines and accessories, and traditional Mexican clothing. Enjoy a snack of roasted or boiled “elotes” (corn on the cob) or a treat from a Mexican bakery or grocery. The Plaza Fiesta shopping center is a great place to sample the culture – it even features a Spanish language movie theater!

The continuing integration of the area is evident in the Spanish-language signs popping up at the Asian markets. With all of these options, your visit to the International Corridor will be an authentic, rewarding experience you won’t soon forget!
