New Treasures, Old Favorites: American Self-Taught Art from the High
The High's annex gallery presents New Treasures, Old Favorites: American Self-Taught Art from the High, the third exhibition in a series designed to highlight the permanent collection. Recent folk art acquisitions include artists from the Southeast such as Howard Finster and Nellie Mae Rowe, Southwestern artists Felipe Benito Archuleta and Charlie Willeto, and other nationally recognized artists such as James Castle and Charles Dellschau. These works, paired with spectacular previously acquired examples by Carlton Garrett, Mattie Lou O'Kelley and many more, reflect the High's world-class collection of self-taught art. Free admission.

The Arts of India and the Himalayas: Recent Acquisitions
Aided principally by the Nathan Rubin-Ida Ladd Family Foundation, the Museum has acquired works of Asian art with a special interest in South Asia, the focus of the gallery's inaugural installation. Featured works include a majestic late 1st-early 2nd century seated Buddha from Mathura in India, one of the most important such works in an American museum, and an 11th-12th century high relief sculpture of a rare, cosmic form of eighteen-armed Vishnu with numerous swaying attendants, a stunning example of the elegance and sophistication of Indian medieval sculpture.
Some of the finest bronze sculptures ever created were produced by artisans working under the Chola Dynasty of South India between the ninth and thirteenth centuries; a sophisticated dancing Krishna from late in this period can be seen in The Arts of South Asia and the Himalayas. A 10th-century bronze Jain altar representing the Jina Rishabhanatha enshrined, a gift of Kellstadt Professor of Marketing Jagdish Sheth of Emory's Goizueta Business School and his wife Madhu, offers eloquent testimony of the third great religious tradition to originate in India.

Galleries of Ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern Art
This new installation will feature the important Carlos Museum acquisition of a collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts purchased primarily with funds donated by the citizens of Atlanta. Coming from the Niagara Falls Museum in Canada, the objects include sumptuously decorated coffins-among the finest known from ancient Egypt-10 mummies, Canopic jars, amulets, shawabtis, jewelry, reliefs and more. The objects represent an overview of the development of funerary art in ancient Egypt at its most inventive and prolific period. Extensive programming will accompany this stellar permanent exhibit of ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern art at the Carlos.

Wrapped in Pride: Ghanaian Kente and African-American Identity
This groundbreaking exhibition, organized by the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History and The Newark Museum examines and celebrates the role of Ghanaian kente cloth as a worldwide expression of African and African-American identity. Accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, Wrapped in Pride explores both African sides of kente the roots of kente in the Asante and Ewe cultures of Ghana and its widespread use in Africa, as well as the roles of kente as adopted in the United States, beginning in the 1950s - 1960s and continuing to the present. The exhibition will include a section on the diverse meanings and uses of kente cloth in Atlanta, based on community research currently being conducted.

WalkAmerica, presented by Kaiser Permanente, raises vitally needed funds that support the March of Dimes' fight to save babies. Registration begins at 7:00 AM and the walk begins at 8:30 AM.
