1 Under Antarctic Ice
This exhibition of work by renowned underwater
photographer and Atlanta native, Norbert Wu is enhanced by mounted specimens
from Fernbank’s collection. In this case he is not only underwater, but under
ice. Under Antarctic Ice shows unique scenes made under the most bizarre

seawater to form eerily beautiful displays. Ice takes wild forms. But most
amazingly, life shows its ability to make strange adaptations to set up a viable
ecology.

Sibille’s work as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Papua New Guinea. The mixed media

– tapa (beaten bark) cloth and natural twine. The artist is “conscious of
bridging the customs of two cultures and the universal tradition of women
creating textiles.”

artifacts purchased primarily with funds donated by the citizens of Atlanta.
Coming from the Niagara Falls Museum in Canada, the objects include sumptuously
decorated coffins-among the finest known from ancient Egypt-10 mummies, Canopic
jars, amulets, shawabtis, jewelry, reliefs and more. The objects represent an
overview of the development of funerary art in ancient Egypt at its most
inventive and prolific period. Extensive programming will accompany this stellar
permanent exhibit of ancient Egyptian, Nubian, and Near Eastern art at the
Carlos.
1-31 Common Culture Prints Show
The Spruill Gallery is proud to have

1-31 Ancient Empires Syria: Land of Civilizations
Embark on a fascinating journey to
the ancient Near East and encounter some of the world’s oldest cultures. Ancient
Empires features more than 450 archaeological treasures including prehistoric
stone tools, ancient cuneiform tablets, jewelry and sculpture from Roman times,
and medieval manuscripts. Trace the succession of early farming villages,
emerging cities, prosperous city-states and powerful empires. Witness their
amazing artifacts, many of which have been on display in the United States until
now. From the earliest farming settlements 10,000 years ago to medieval times,
learn why historic Syria was a birthplace of civilizations and a center for
trade, metallurgy, religion and writing. Celebrate the inventiveness of a land
and its people, and the rich cultural and scientific legacy they left behind in
this once-in-a lifetime exhibition.
1-31 The Arts of India and the Himalayas: Recent Acquisitions
Aided principally by the Nathan
Rubin-Ida Ladd Family Foundation, the Museum has acquired works of Asian art
with a special interest in South Asia, the focus of the gallery's inaugural
installation. Featured works include a majestic late 1st-early 2nd century
seated Buddha from Mathura in India, one of the most important such works in an
American museum, and an 11th-12th century high relief sculpture of a rare,
cosmic form of eighteen-armed Vishnu with numerous swaying attendants, a
stunning example of the elegance and sophistication of Indian medieval
sculpture. Some of the finest bronze sculptures ever created were produced by
artisans working under the Chola Dynasty of South India between the ninth and
thirteenth centuries; a sophisticated dancing Krishna from late in this period
can be seen in The Arts of South Asia and the Himalayas. A 10th-century bronze
Jain altar representing the Jina Rishabhanatha enshrined, a gift of Kellstadt
Professor of Marketing Jagdish Sheth of Emory's Goizueta Business School and his
wife Madhu, offers eloquent testimony of the third great religious tradition to
originate in India.

Carlos Museum has acquired two of these recent works, monoprints from a series
based on a quotation from the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Remarks
on Color. Those, along with several prints and paintings on loan from other
institutions, will compose this vivid exhibition.
